The Lodger (1927), with Hugo Max (Film) – The Electric Palace
## The Lodger (1927), with Hugo Max (Film)
Experience a special evening of silent cinema at the Electric Palace with acclaimed violist Hugo Max performing a live solo score to _The Lodger_, Hitchcock’s gripping early thriller starring Ivor Novello.
The event also includes a short presentation from Electric Palace archivist Gavin Maitland, sharing highlights from their National Lottery Heritage Funded Archive project, including volunteers’ work cataloguing every performance at the cinema since its opening in 1911.
Hugo Max performs live scores to silent films on solo viola, regularly soundtracking screenings at London’s Prince Charles Cinema and Picturehouse Cinemas across the UK. He has presented nationwide tours focussing on silent horror, expressionism, the films of F. W. Murnau and Alfred Hitchcock, making solo appearances at many of the country’s landmark venues including the BFI Southbank, Bo’ness’ Hippodrome and Tyneside Cinema.
Packed with the stylistic flourishes and experimental trick shots that would become defining trademarks of Hitchcock’s film language, the third feature by the Master of Suspense is a gripping murder mystery propelled by Ivor Novello’s iconic central performance.
